Compensation Range: $16.66 per hour to $28.51 per hour depending on
experience and qualifications
Do you have a passion for sports and want to help grow new youth
and adult sports leagues in Oak Harbor? We are looking for
enthusiastic individuals that can lead and assist a variety of
youth and adult recreational leagues. This position, under the
direction and supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, will
assist in the evaluation and even distribution of players, training
and recruitment of volunteer coaches, and directly oversee league
games and practices as officials, scorekeepers or game monitors to
create and maintain a fun, safe and supportive environment for all
participants, spectators and officials. Our goal is to
collaboratively develop and implement community recreational
programming and events serving all ages. Join us in the development
of new enrichment classes, sports clinics, recreational sports

We are looking for people able or willing to learn how to:
Officiate and keep the official score at games of various
sports.
Teach and coach youth athletes in various sports including, but not
limited to, Rugby, Street Hockey, and Extreme Archery in fast paced
and loud environments.
Assist in the evaluation of players and drafting of teams with the
goal of even distribution of talent amongst teams.
Assist with league events, such as coaches' meetings and training
or league-wide end of season banquets.
Monitor games to ensure fair play and a positive environment for
all involved.
Aid in the development and implementation of new sports leagues,
clinics and tournaments throughout the City of Oak Harbor.
Work activities involve multiple skills and may include, but are
not limited to, any or all the following depending on area of
assignment, operational necessity, emergency services, special
projects, and seasonal factors:
Plans, coordinates, and leads indoor and outdoor recreational
activities.
Keep accurate and updated score to display to participants and
spectators.
Officiate games in a fair and unbiased manner maintaining a safe
environment and engaging pace for participants.
Learn and enforce league rules and regulations and provide
appropriate guidance towards coaches and participants to ensure
that the awareness and fairness of play.
Instruct and teach participants in various subjects including
demonstrating proper techniques, methods, and fundamentals of
classes or clinics of specific and varying subjects.
Offer guidance to participants, helping them improve their skills,
reach specific preset goals and develop an enjoyment and passion
for the subject.
Maintain a fun, safe and supportive environment for all
participants to learn and grow at their own pace.
Evaluates participant progress and provide feedback on areas for
improvement.
Encourage participation through effective communication, engaging
subject matter and lesson plans, and an inspiring display of
passion for the subject.
Maintain accurate records of participant attendance, progress, or
any other incidents that occur during activities. Assist with
onsite program registration where applicable.
Observe necessary precautions to ensure the safety of participants
and spectators at all times and render routine first aid in cases
of minor injury.
Maintain needed supplies and equipment required for a successful
program.
Set up before and clean up after all recreational programs to allow
the use of shared spaces by multiple groups and activities.
Associated Functions:
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Assists with Parks and Recreation events and other programs.
Provide a high level of customer service to the public as
needed.
May operate a city vehicle for the purpose of transporting program
participants in related program activities.

Evaluate the feedback given by participants to improve classes and
develop and constantly improving curriculum.
Participate in various sports as an official.
Ability to carry equipment and supplies as needed for
programming.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience
that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to
perform the essential job functions may be considered.
Minimum age of 16 years.
City-provided training to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid
Certification within three (3) months of hire.
Complete a comprehensive background screening for Washington Child
and Adult Abuse background check prior to hire.
Valid state driver's license and ability to provide a driver's
abstract showing a good driving record.
Must be available to work and lead recreation programs in the
evenings (4pm to 8pm) and on weekend days (9am to 4pm) hours are
variable based on programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
Work in organizing programs, classes or event planning and
coordinating volunteers.
Experience planning and leading programs in a paid or volunteer
role.
Obtain and/or maintain a Food Handler's Permit within three (3)
months of hire.
The physical demands and characteristics of the work environment
described here are representative of those occurring in the
performance of the essential functions of this job. Reasonable

Work is performed indoors in the office or program area and
outdoors at City of Oak Harbor parks and facilities. Activity such
as traversing and assisting clients may be required as may travel
to other locations for recreational programming. Requires ability
to sit, walk or stand, to remain stationary and move for extended
periods of time, ability to move and lift items with assistance up
to thirty (30) pounds. This position also requires the ability to
participate in sports as an official which requires the ability to
move at a rate to keep up with competitive recreational play as
well as maintain the ability to observe, analyze and manage play by
participants. Work requires the ability to communicate information
and ideas, ability to observe details at a close range, and normal
visual and hearing acuity. May include evening and weekend work.
May require strenuous physical activity.
